Poeta rupturista, su obra produjo un corte radical en la poesía hispanoamericana, dando origen a un nuevo modelo literario: el antipoema.
El poeta que subvirtió de manera tajante la lírica chilena en su época, nació en San Fabián de Alico, cerca de Chillán, en el seno de una familia campesina. Junto a sus padres y numerosos hermanos, Violeta Parra y Roberto Parra entre ellos.
