          Orlando Letelier fue militante del Partido Socialista y perteneció al gobierno del Presidente Allende. En el inicio de la dictadura, Letelier tuvo que partir al exilio: primero en Venezuela y luego en Estados Unidos. Cuando se hallaba en este último, el 21 de septiembre de 1976, fue asesinado junto a su ayudante Ronni Moffit, mediante una bomba manejada a control remoto ubicada en su auto. Sus restos fueron enterrados en Venezuela y luego, en 1994, repatriados en nuestro país. Su homicidio fue comandado por la DINA, en el marco de la Operación Cóndor.
