Lo jóvenes que cumplían los 18 años en Chile debían realizar el servicio militar obligatorio. Durante la dictadura militar, el servicio militar se alargó de uno a dos años y aumentó su dificultad para evitarlo. Se señala que en esa época los tratos a los conscriptos era duro, muchas veces humillante y atentatorio de los derechos humanos, lo que originó que el servicio militar fuera cada vez más impopular.
