Fue una de las instituciones de administración de regímenes previsionales del antiguo Sistema de Reparto Solidario, el cual financiaba las pensiones de los trabajadores. Este sistema conformado por las diferentes cajas de previsión, fue sustituido en 1982 por el INP (hoy IPS, Instituto de Previsión Social).
